PB3A
Nowadays, health becomes a significant issue in the society. Everyone, the elder and the younger, wants to be healthy but few actually know how to live a healthy life. I found a scholar article that focuses on the healthy life style from the UCSB library: Successful intervention models for obesity prevention: The role of healthy life styles (Healthy life style). In this article, the author shows 12 basic methods that can prevent obesity in a circle graph. In order to persuade more people to live a healthy life, I would like to transform this scholar article into two genres—Facebook posts and newspaper—the former one for the young people and the latter one for the elder.
To convince the young people of the healthy life, I would firstly transform the detailed statistics into two pictures as the main body of the post: one picture of a handsome boy with beautiful muscle and strong figure and the other picture of a lovely girl with long-gold hair, big-blue eyes, and slim figure. After all, the young people are adolescent when people desire “love” most. A picture that contains a perfect opposite sex can easily persuade most young people. What is more, I would change the long and boring title of the scholar article into a concise and exciting headline, like “Let’s be healthy right now!” Most young people like the style of being simple and direct. Furthermore, I would cut out all the detailed information and deductive process. Young people live in a life with fast pace. They feel boring to check the long process.
Next, to persuade the elder who do not use the Internet frequently, I will transform the scholar article into a newspaper. Firstly, I will emphasize that the author is a PHD and he is an experienced and famous expert in the health field. Most old people are more willing to believe the authority than to check the results of a person that is not “official”. Secondly, I will reserve the detailed statistics as much as possible for the reason that most old people are retired and stay at home all day. They have much time to study the health. Detailed data would increase the credibility of the newspaper after they spend a lot of time studying the data. Thirdly, I would add an introduction of every term. For example, when I read “A Cochrane systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for preventing obesity”, I was wondering what is Cochrane system. I will add a description from Wiki to explain this term. To persuade the elder, the article should be clear enough, giving all the detailed information if necessary, and seemingly authoritative.
In a summary, young people like conciseness and visualization; old people like official methods and detailed information. This is the core reason for my transformation.

  1. Health is quite a significant topic and everybody cares it. I think Facebook post will definitely work well for a younger audience. I really like the two pictures you have designed, which are attractive for the young people. I addition, as you have stated, they are always impatient of the long process, and I notice that there is a limitation of the Facebook post length. I think it will be a tough task to select which are the necessary information. The elderly must take their health seriously and are willing to spend much time on it. I agree with you that for a older audience, detailed data are credible. Also, I think you have to pay attention of the conventions of newspaper articles, because they are quite different from the scholarly piece. Maybe you can learn about the the paragraph organization of newspaper articles and it will be helpful when translating the scholarly piece.

  2. I really like the idea behind using primarily graphics to appeal to a younger audience; however, I think you should be careful in your depictions of "beautiful" and "perfect." A too-stereotypical image of beauty may have an effect opposite of what you desire. Also, is there going to be text that goes along with the photographs? I am a little confused about the "detailed statistics" section in the third paragraph...are you saying you're going to include detailed statistics because old people have time to read them? Other than that, I think a newspaper article is perfect for an older audience, as newspapers have become quite obsolete. I like the proposal overall!

  3. Facebook and newspaper are two really great examples of genres that older and younger people would utilize to get their information. Having pictures to articulate your ideas is also good, but will there be a caption that goes along with them? Facebook posts that contain some form of graphic with a statistic are usually accompanied by caption in the form of text in the post or overlayed onto the image. I think the difference in text overlayed onto the image could greatly differentiate the younger and older audiences.

  4. I think that the Facebook post and newspaper genres are both perfect for your audiences. Young people definitely have shorter attention spans and like to get information through pictures rather than words. And old people are more thoughtful and skeptical and want a detailed and credible description. The only concern that I have is that it may be hard to add enough information about the article in only a picture for the Facebook post. I would probably add a short description for the picture like some Facebook posts do. The comments section could also be an area where you could add a lot of information. Also, I would also pay close attention to the conventions of Facebook posts such as the number of likes.
